The CMA CGM Group is strategically expanding its Indian operations as Asia's supply chain diversification reaches unprecedented levels. The French logistics giant recently chartered the 4,395-TEU SCI Mumbai for its India-registered fleet, reinforcing its coastal shipping capabilities during a period when India's container trade volume surged 12% year-on-year in 2024 - the highest growth among major global markets.

This expansion aligns with India's emerging role in global logistics, though infrastructure limitations persist. While India boasts four billion-ton ports, their combined container throughput (666 million TEU at Mundra Port) remains dwarfed by China's Shanghai Port alone (4,730 million TEU). CMA CGM's localized fleet deployment demonstrates its commitment to "Better Ways" strategy, which emphasizes sustainable globalization through balanced trade development.

The Group's Indian operations gained additional momentum after receiving Chery Group's "Best Supply Chain Partner 2024" award in April 2025, recognizing its integrated logistics solutions for automotive exports. Simultaneously, CMA CGM's participation in the blockchain-based TradeLens platform enhances cargo visibility for Indian shippers, with the system now tracking nearly half of global containerized freight.

Industry analysts note this expansion coincides with critical market shifts:

Global container volumes hit 1.832 billion TEU in 2024 (6% growth)

Effective vessel capacity decreased 1% despite record newbuild deliveries, due to Red Sea diversions

India's Mundra Port handles 40% of national container trade but faces efficiency challenges

CMA CGM's dual focus on international routes and coastal shipping positions it to capitalize on India's logistics modernization efforts, particularly as manufacturers seek alternative Asian hubs. The Group's 160,000-strong workforce and end-to-end solutions provide competitive advantages in this rapidly evolving market.
